The faculty team composed of Xia Yongliang, Sun Haiyan, Ruan Shanming and Ni Zheji from the FirstSchoolof Clinical Medicine, ZCMU, won the second prize in the national final of the 2nd National Teaching Innovation Contest for College Teachers. The team’s reform and innovation of the course, Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine earned it the prize, which marks the best achievement ZCMU has made in theevent. The national final of the Contest was held at Xi’an Jiaotong University from July 26th to 31st.

The teaching of Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a course that links TCM theories and clinical disciplines, faces the problems of a loose connection between theory and practice, diagnosis and treatment detachment, and inheritance and innovation inadequacy. Dedicated to the research and practice of teaching reform, the team has established a curriculum system based on the five-element theory in TCM and conducted the 5L teaching with TCM characteristics. It cultivates a learning environment of diagnosis and treatment, cites ancient classics in case explanation, raises clinical questions and assigns group work in teaching to better qualify students for their work. The team also employs the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle and formative evaluation, which have achieved remarkable effects.
